LENA Grow Technical Requirements

Technical requirements for using LENA Grow technology at your site

LENA Grow requires the use of hardware and software. The following are the requirements to be able to operate LENA Grow at a school, center, or family child care home.

LENA Grow App

Teachers use the LENA Grow app to access LENA data and complete app sessions. Each teacher has a LENA Grow account. Teachers may share a device. Required:

  • Unique email address for each participating teacher
  • Smartphone or tablet, ideally < 5 years old:
    • iOS/iPadOS 16.6+
    • Android 7.0+
    • 2GB+ RAM, 150 MB available storage
    • Internet connectivity (cellular or Wi-Fi)

LENA Online Technical Requirements

LENA Dock and Devices

LENA ships a dock and devices for each classroom. Docks are placed in the classroom to which they are assigned for use on each LENA Day. Required:

  • Site must either be in range of a cellular network or have access to the site's Wi-Fi in order to process data.
  • A standard 3-prong power outlet for the dock.

LENA Wi-Fi Connector App

A mobile app allows you to connect the LENA dock to your local Wi-Fi network if the built-in cellular network is not strong enough. Required for Wi-Fi connection and use:

  • Smartphone or tablet:
    • iOS/iPadOS 16.6 or later
    • Android 7.0 or higher
  • Location services and Wi-Fi enabled (temporary)
  • Site’s Wi-Fi name and password (if any)
  • Wi-Fi upload speed of 2 Mbps per participating classroom

Additional Recommendations

  • Color printer if printing paper reports from LENA Online

  • Ensure notifications are turned on for the LENA Grow app

  • If a site has neither cellular nor Wi-Fi access, the dock may be kept offsite. Someone can bring devices to the site on the morning of the LENA Day, then retrieve them for processing offsite after.
