Help: Missing LENA Day Data

What to do when your LENA reports seem incomplete or show the wrong date.

Here are the things to investigate.

Check the tech

  • Check the dock to ensure connectivity.
  • If any devices are still working, let them finish.

Consider the timing

  • Has it been at least 4 hours since the dock showed Ready on all connected devices Ready? After upload, the next steps are automated analysis and creation of graphs. This process can take a few hours.

Check child's Recordings list for problems

  • In LENA Online, view a child's full list of recordings by clicking the Children tab, the child's name, and then the Recordings tab.
  • Use the details on this tab to scan for issues with duration, timing, assignment, or group association that can prevent the data from appearing on the LENA Day report as expected.

Look for short recordings.

The minimum duration for a LENA Day is 2 hours.

The Interaction Chart points out short recordings for individuals. However, if no child in the room meets the minimum duration, no report is generated for that date at all.

Look for for hidden recordings.

The Recordings list indicates which recordings are hidden and which are displayed on reports.
To maintain data integrity, LENA automatically hides recordings when:
  • Group has already been closed for some time.
  • Recording occurred weeks before the group was created.
  • Any child contributed to the group twice in a calendar week – whether accidentally or on purpose. The second day received is auto-hidden for all children.

  • Usually these rules remove problem data, like accidental recordings, data that wasn't cleared before the sequence, and attempts to "make up" a LENA Day with an absent child. In complex situations, these rules can cause real LENA Days to be hidden.
  • If appropriate, the account owner can unhide real LENA Days and hide accidental ones. LENA Support is available to help investigate as needed.

Check whether the data is in the child's previous LENA Group.

A child's Recordings list shows his or her whole history of recordings, grouped by room, with most recent at the top.

LENA Online shows a child's LENA Day on the Group he child was associated with at the beginning of that day. A late move can result in data going to the wrong room. Check the previous Group in the Recordings list to see if the data are there instead.

LENA Support can move the child's LENA Day to the current Group – just send us the details.

Room prep

👉 Sometimes a late move can also cause recordings to be hidden! LENA Support can help untangle these situations.

Check with teacher about attendance, last-minute device swaps, or participation issues.

Check in with the teacher for anything unusual that may have happened, such as:

  • No recording started, no recording to be processed because:
    • Child was absent.
    • Child refused to wear the vest.
    • Child arrived very late and they forgot to start the recording.
    • Device would not turn on or start recording.
    • Child did not have an assigned device.
