Help: Device seems broken on LENA Day

How to handle an unexpected device issue on the morning of a LENA Day

If a device will not record on a LENA Day, assign a spare device so the child can participate. Troubleshoot the device later.

1. Use a spare device for the day.

  • Find an extra, unassigned device. Avoid using a device that belongs to an absent child.
  • Write the child's name on the device's label.
  • Start the recording, and place it on the child.

2. Assign the spare device in LENA Online.

Before processing, the coach or other LENA Online user will need to assign the device to the child in LENA Online.

  1. Click into the Group screen, open the Children tab, and click child's name.
  2. Click Assign Device and type in the spare device serial number – here it's #17609. (You can leave the original device assigned, or click the little x to remove it.)

3. Next steps.

If the device is from a prepackaged LENA Grow Room Kit...

LENA Box
  1. Write the problem on a sticky note or tape and affix to the device. Examples: Won't turn on or Error 04.
  2. Store the device with materials to return to LENA after the sequence.

Note: If you are now short on devices for this room, contact support@lena.org for assistance.

Troubleshoot the original device (#16073 in the above example). Many problems can be fixed.

  • Problem solved? Decide which device the child will use going forward, and unassign the other one.
  • Problem persists? Unassign the bad device, and keep using the spare. Contact LENA as described in Replacing a LENA Device Under Warranty.
