LENA Device Safety

Is the LENA device safe for children? Yes! Read why below.

Electronic Safety

The LENA device has passed all required testing for electronic devices and toys. Read more here

The LENA device does not use internet or Bluetooth® connectivity. Data is transferred via a physical USB connection at the end of the day, when the child is no longer wearing the device.

The LENA device does not transmit or receive radio or telecommunication signals like a cell phone, tablet, e-reader, smart watch, wireless speaker, or any of the various smart home gadgets around us (wireless doorbell, smart thermostat, home air quality monitor, etc.).

The LENA device does not contain a magnet.

The LENA device complies with FCC radio interference standards for digital devices.

By virtue of having electronic components, the LENA device does emit a small amount of electromagnetic interference, similar to emissions from a hearing aid or battery-operated toy

Classroom Distraction

The LENA device does not display real-time data. Reports are created after the LENA Day. LENA prioritizes reflective feedback over real-time notifications. Without distractions like live turn counts, interaction alerts, or conversation prompts, caregivers can focus on interacting with children in their regular routines, not the device. There is no reason for children or adults to check the device during the day
What's the best real-time feedback? Tune into children's voices, faces, and body language!

Medical Device Interference

Occasionally caregivers have concerns about using the LENA device near medical and/or implanted devices, such as pacemakers, cochlear implants, or sternal wires.

While we can't dispense medical advice, we have no reason to believe the device would interfere with medical devices or treatments. It has been widely used by researchers in NICU settings and with children who use cochlear implants.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to share the above information with their medical providers to make an informed decision.
