LENA Home report interpretation and discussion is the backbone of the program. Reports provide parents with the feedback needed to reflect on their talk environment, set goals, and celebrate successes. It is important for the home visitor to support families in discovering how to understand their data.
Review the annotated LENA Report below to note what’s measured and how it’s displayed. How to interpret and explain these areas of the report will be discussed more in depth during the next lesson.
Earning stars can be an important motivator towards increasing early talk at home. Specific examples of how families earn stars can be seen in the video below.
A few notes regarding stars:
- If a child experiences developmental delays, it may be more challenging for families to achieve stars for conversational turns. Focus on the areas of growth that are shown, such as increases in adult words or small increases in conversational turns. Don’t forget to share the value of non-verbal exchanges as well.
- Instead of one 20-minute reading session, we recommend multiple 3-5 minute reading sessions throughout the day.
- If you are giving star stickers to families, they can be placed on the Talking Tips Reward chart.
Use the LENA Home Guided Questions while reviewing LENA reports with families. It may be helpful to create extra copies for family reference.
